SING ALONG, Avignon!

SING ALONG AvignonWhat is that? It’s a call... Lola’s call.. Lola, who moved from Paris only a year ago, inviting people here to get together around one optimistic idea: LEARNING ENGLISH as a way to build up self-confidence and humanity, a way to become an independent individual and yet fully be part of something bigger than the self, a way to find meaning. So why learn English, why through songs and why put on a show at the end of the year? Because English is the most spoken language in the world and singing is such an efficient tool for remembering foreign expressions.

The rhythm carves landmarks into your body, the rhythm plays musical beauty for your soul and the text’s emotions make sense. They all trigger long lasting memorization and bring solidity to your knowledge. Suddenly you’re not just facing a boring list of animal nouns or using a dictionary to prepare some anonymous exam, the contents of which you may soon forget. Suddenly sound happens, you are sharing with actual people and really communicating something worthwhile. And the desire to do the best show ever at the end of the year drives you so intensely that you can push yourself beyond what you thought were your own limits... the show makes you grow.

OK! THEORETICALLY, THE DREAM IS FINE, NICE AND BIG, BUT HOW DO YOU MAKE IT COME TRUE?

Easy! In Lola’s workshop, you regularly practice going through an English song step by step. First, you repeat sounds you don’t understand at all, as babies do to learn how to speak, with no written text nor translation whatsoever to “help” them. Once you have got this part right, you hear the meaning of what you can pronounce and are encouraged to trust your ears and brain will remember it, by both individual and collective quizzing, thorough, fast and fun.

Then, only when you possess the beginning of the song’s lyrics orally, do you move on to reading or writing anything. That last part is a piece of cake, because Lola makes sure the written work she gives you is adapted to where you stand exactly: even if your group forms a team with the singing, each and every one of you can dig vocabulary and grammar as deep as your own specific capacities will allow.

SING ALONG is a number of small workshops uniting into one big vocal group when June comes: whether young or old, socially lucky or not, sick or healthy, beginner or experienced, you belong in it! The more diversity it contains, the better it gets.

THAT’S WHY YOU CAN MAKE YOUR WORKSHOP HAPPEN WHEREVER YOU ARE, WITH WHOEVER YOU WANT, AND HOWEVER YOU WANT...
